The Alan Turing Institute will execute a scientific research initiative specifically designed to defend the nation from malicious attacks, according to a Tuesday declaration.
This strategic shift follows major restructuring at the publicly-funded organization, including the stepping down of its previous CEO last month after both staff concerns and official demands for major restructuring.
Rising Online Risks
The fresh initiative comes amid growing concern about the nation's susceptibility to digital service failures and cyber-attacks.
Recent incidents have highlighted these weaknesses, including a major outage affecting international online platforms and recent cyber-attacks that halted manufacturing at major factories and distribution networks across multiple companies.
Management and Supervision
A former commander of the the nation's space operations center will report back next month on how the government-funded institute can most effectively assist the scale of government AI ambitions in national security, homeland protection and information gathering.
Strategic Realignment
The institute's chair, a ex-Amazon UK executive, confirmed that 78 different research projects at the 440-staff institute have been closed, transferred out or completed because they aren't consistent with the revised strategy.
Organizational Difficulties
The organization has faced organizational challenges since last year as staff protested against changes, culminating in a collection of workers filing a whistleblower complaint to the appropriate oversight organization.
The center's administration stated that these employee allegations were third-party reviewed by a neutral third party that found them to have lack merit.
Expanded Research Focus
